Day Trading For a Living - What Does it Take?

Many of the markets that day traders work in are open 24 hours--currency trading for example. And the technology that we have at our fingertips today make it possible for almost anyone to trade them around the clock. What is not to like about the potential of making a lot of money in a 4-hour work week? No wonder then, that a lot of people have taken this route to making a living, most with barely the minimum of information besides the hype that the brokers and purveyors of trading systems throw out. It is true that the people who made the most money during the gold rush were the spade sellers. And to be sure, a lot of people make obscene amounts of money with day trading but unfortunately, they are typically not the new gold miners.

So what does it take to make a living day trading and win? There are no guarantees, but you should first treat day trading like you would any other professional activity and a serious business. You will have set hours and a set space, even if you are doing it at home and there is a reason for this-during those hours when you enter that space, you will automatically focus on trading and nothing else. If you are at home, make sure you are not distracted during your trading hours. If you are whimsical about your trading hours and approach it more like a part time hobby, you would make a tasty morsel for the disciplined trading sharks. Next, you would want the best technology that you can afford and dedicate it to trading. You should not use your home computer that has your favorite games installed as that will make for a very short trading career. And finally, you would look at all aspects of your trading career to make sure that it gives you everything that a "real job" would. Can you do this part time while holding down a real job? Yes, sure. However the same rules apply as above. You cannot hope to trade hurriedly during your lunch hour and hope to win. Save it for the evening hours.

As with any other information you get on the Internet, please consider this article just the starting point for further inquiry and consult with qualified advisors.

Author spent over two decades in the investment industry and is now retired, doing what he likes most - playing with the Internet and computers.
